December in Metro Detroit is pure magic—from twinkling lights and winter festivals to cozy indoor activities perfect for families. Whether you're looking for something festive, creative, or simply relaxing during this busy season, Metro Detroit has something for everyone.
One very special event this month is close to my heart… my first-ever art exhibit, featuring 18 golden-hour photographs taken across Michigan over the years. If you love nature, storytelling, and capturing peaceful moments, you won’t want to miss it.
Below is your guide to family-friendly things to do in Metro Detroit this December, including a highlight on my Art Exhibit Opening Reception at the Village Arts Factory in Canton, MI.
🎨 1. Visit the Village Arts Factory in Canton, MI — My First Art Exhibit!
If you’re looking for a relaxing, creative, and family-friendly outing, stop by the Village Arts Factory, located off Cherry Hill in Canton.
✨ Opening Reception
📅 Date: December 12th⏰ Time: 6:00–8:00 PM📍 Location: Village Arts Factory, Canton, MI (off Cherry Hill)
This collection features 18 photographs captured during golden hour—the time of day I value most for its warmth, peace, and natural storytelling. Many of these images were inspired by my childhood spent in Northern Michigan, where winters and summers shaped my love for photography and nature.
Bring your family to enjoy art, meet the artists, and slow down during the busiest month of the year.
❄️ 2. Walk Through Metro Detroit’s Christmas Markets
Metro Detroit’s holiday markets are full of local vendors, handmade goods, and treats families love. A few favorites:
Eastern Market Holiday Markets
Downtown Detroit Markets at Cadillac Square
Kerrytown KindleFest in Ann Arbor
These markets are stroller-friendly, festive, and perfect for last-minute gift hunting.
⛸️ 3. Go Ice Skating at Campus Martius
No December list is complete without Detroit’s iconic ice rink! Families can bundle up, enjoy the tree, sip cocoa, and skate under the city lights. It’s also a great spot for capturing candid golden-hour or nighttime photos.
🥨 4. Explore Downtown Plymouth and Canton
Both communities go all-in on holiday charm:
Light displays
Family-friendly restaurants
Small shops
Seasonal events
If you’re already heading to Canton for the Village Arts Factory opening reception, make a night of it and explore nearby.

This art exhibit is a dream come true, and I’d love to share this moment with you and your family.
🎁 Make December Memorable
With so many festive, family-friendly things to do in Metro Detroit this month, December is the perfect time to step away from the rush and enjoy moments that matter most.
And if you’re looking for a calm, creative evening…I’d be honored to see you at the Village Arts Factory on December 12th from 6–8 PM.
