Juneteenth is a powerful day of remembrance. It marks the end of slavery in the United States and the long-awaited freedom for those who had been enslaved, especially in Texas, where news of the Emancipation Proclamation arrived two and a half years late, on June 19, 1865. But while this day celebrates freedom, it is also a time to reflect on the journey that brought us here and the work that still lies ahead.
As Michigan families, this Juneteenth provides us a significant opportunity to honor the past and confront the present. While we rightfully celebrate the end of legalized slavery, it’s also essential to recognize that modern-day slavery still exists in many forms today. This ongoing injustice calls us to reflect deeply on the work to create a truly just society for all people.
The Importance of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is significant because it symbolizes the liberation, hope, and resilience of Black Americans. It is a day when we acknowledge the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us. As we gather with our families, we honor their strength and sacrifice, taking the time to educate ourselves and our children about this vital part of history.
This year, as we celebrate Juneteenth with family barbecues, community events, and moments of reflection, we must remember that there are still many forms of injustice that we need to address. It’s more than just a historical day; it’s a call to action.
Modern-Day Slavery: The Fight Continues
Though slavery in the traditional sense was abolished in 1865, we must not turn a blind eye to the realities of modern-day slavery. Around the world and within the United States, millions of people—particularly women and children—are trapped in forms of forced labor, human trafficking, and exploitation. In fact, the International Labour Organization estimates that there are over 40 million victims of human trafficking globally.
In Michigan, there have been efforts to address human trafficking, but the fight is far from over. Victims of modern slavery may be hidden in plain sight, working in industries like agriculture, construction, domestic work, and even in places we may not expect. These individuals are often denied their fundamental human rights, living in fear and working under oppressive, abusive conditions.
This Juneteenth, as we reflect on freedom and history, we must remember that true freedom means everyone is free—no one should be exploited, trafficked, or forced into a life of servitude. As families, we can take the opportunity to teach our children about these issues, talk openly about the importance of human rights, and take active steps toward preventing these injustices in our communities.
What Can Michigan Families Do?
Educate Yourself and Your Family: Knowledge is power. Learn about the ongoing issues related to human trafficking and modern-day slavery. There are many local and national organizations working to fight these issues, and they offer valuable resources for education and awareness. Teaching our children empathy, respect for others, and awareness of injustice can inspire the next generation to be part of the solution.
Support Organizations Fighting Human Trafficking: There are many organizations that provide resources, support, and advocacy for those affected by human trafficking. In Michigan, groups like The Michigan Abolitionist Project work tirelessly to raise awareness, provide resources to victims, and advocate for legislative change. Donating time, resources, or simply spreading awareness can help support their mission.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you see something, say something. Being vigilant in our communities can make a huge difference in combating human trafficking. If you suspect someone is being exploited or trapped in forced labor, it's important to report it to the authorities.
Raise Your Voice: Advocating for policies that protect vulnerable populations is essential. Supporting bills and measures aimed at ending human trafficking, providing resources to survivors, and increasing the penalties for offenders is key to ending modern-day slavery.
Support Ethical Businesses: Another way to make a difference is by supporting businesses that actively fight against exploitation in their supply chains. Many companies are committed to ensuring that their products are made by workers who are treated fairly and with dignity.
Reflect, Remember, and Take Action

This Juneteenth, as you gather with your family and community, take a moment to reflect not only on the victory of emancipation but also on the work still to be done. Acknowledge the progress we’ve made, but also the realities of modern-day slavery that continue to impact countless lives around the world—and even in our own backyard.
Let’s use this Juneteenth as a chance to raise awareness, start meaningful conversations, and remind ourselves that freedom and justice are ongoing battles that all require us to actively participate. It’s up to us as individuals and families to continue the work that began on that momentous day in 1865.
Freedom is a right, not a privilege. Together, we can honor the history of Juneteenth while making a tangible difference in creating a more just and equitable future for all.
