It marks the end of slavery in the United States and the long-awaited freedom for those who had been enslaved, especially in Texas, where news of the Emancipation Proclamation arrived two and a half years late, on June 19, 1865. But while this day celebrates freedom, it is also a time to reflect on the journey that brought us here and the work that still lies ahead.
