From a Michigan Family & Silhouette Photographer Who Chases the Light—Even in Winter

As a Michigan family and individual photographer, there’s one thing I’ll never stop chasing: a good sunset.
There’s something deeply emotional about how the light hits the water at just the right moment—the golden glow, the silhouettes of kids splashing, couples walking hand in hand, or a family cuddled together in the breeze. Whether it’s summer sand between your toes or the fresh chill of a Lake Michigan winter, these sunsets are pure magic.
If you're a Northern Michigan local, a visitor, or simply planning your next photo adventure, here are five must-see sunset spots that are perfect for unforgettable moments—and stunning photography.
🌅 1. Frankfort, Michigan – The Frankfort Light
Located right at the end of Main Street, the Frankfort Lighthouse is a dreamy place to catch the sunset. Families gather on the beach, teens leap into the waves, and couples stroll along the breakwall. As the sun dips behind the lighthouse, Lake Michigan lights up in shades of peach and rose gold. It's the perfect place for candid, relaxed family photos—or to soak in the view.
🌅 2. Empire Beach & Bluff – Near Sleeping Bear Dunes | Northern Michigan Sunset
Empire Beach is a beloved treasure in Leelanau County, especially at sunset. You can watch the sky turn vibrant colors while the waves roll in or take the short hike to Empire Bluff for panoramic views high above the shoreline. It’s one of my favorite places to photograph silhouettes—especially when the sky meets the sand in soft evening light.
🌅 3. Petoskey State Park – A Peaceful Sunset on the Rocks
If you’re near Little Traverse Bay, Petoskey State Park offers a quieter, rockier shoreline that’s just as beautiful. Families searching for Petoskey stones during the day often stay for the sunset, where the sky reflects off the water like a painting. Whether it's a winter stroll or a summer beach day, this spot is ideal for individual portraits and laid-back family sessions.
🌅 4. Peterson Park – Northport, MI
High on the bluffs near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, Peterson Park is a hidden gem. This overlook offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan with rugged terrain and fewer crowds. It’s one of my go-to spots for sunset photography—especially when I want quiet, uninterrupted light and a dramatic horizon line for silhouettes. Bring a blanket, your loved ones, and take it all in.
🌅 5. Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse – Iconic & Romantic
This bright red lighthouse has become a symbol of the stunning sunsets in Northern Michigan. Located right where Lake Michigan meets Round Lake, the Charlevoix South Pier is iconic for a reason. Waves crash, boats drift in the distance, and the lighthouse stands firm as the sun sets behind it. It’s a stunning backdrop for family photography and a dreamy spot for visitors looking to experience true "Up North" magic.
❄️ Yes, Even Winter Sunsets Are Worth It
Michigan’s beauty doesn’t pause when the temperature drops. Some of the most peaceful and breathtaking sunsets occur in winter, when the crisp air is cold, the beaches are quiet, and the sky turns a deep, icy pink and gold. I’ve photographed families wrapped in scarves, snowflakes catching the light, and kids playing in the snowbanks with Lake Michigan behind them. If you can brave the cold, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
