Ann Arbor might be known for its world-class university and buzzing downtown, but tucked between the better-known hotspots are a handful of local treasures that hold a special place in my heart.
I grew up in Ann Arbor and had so much fun exploring all its quirks and corners. I remember walking to Blimpy Burger, attending Michigan football games in a sea of maize and blue, and rowing crew during high school at Pioneer—my old stomping grounds were along the Huron River at Argo Park. Growing up in a college town shaped me—I know firsthand the magic of Ann Arbor, its diversity, and how much there is to love here. Whether visiting for the first time or reliving your memories, these hidden gems are worth your time.
Here are five of my favorite under-the-radar places to check out in Ann Arbor:
1. Ann Arbor Fairy Doors
Step into a bit of magic—literally. These tiny, whimsical fairy doors are hidden throughout downtown Ann Arbor, tucked into storefronts, walls, and even libraries. Kids love hunting for them, and let’s be honest, adults do too. Grab a coffee and make it a low-key scavenger hunt!
2. Tio's Mexican Café
Craving chips and guac with a side of comfort food? Tio’s is a local staple and one of the oldest restaurants in Ann Arbor, founded in 1986. It’s got that laid-back, no-frills vibe that feels like home. If they’re still making their tableside guacamole, I recommend fresh, creamy guacamole and making it just how you like it. Pair it with a refreshing margarita; you’ve got the perfect casual night out.
3. Leslie Science & Nature Center
This place brings back so many memories for me. I remember going there on school field trips in the '90s—exploring trails, learning about wildlife, and staring in awe at the raptors up close. It’s still a great spot to walk, learn, and reconnect with nature, especially with kids in tow.
4. The Law Quad + Casa Dominick’s
Want to feel like you’ve stepped into Hogwarts? The University of Michigan Law Quadrangle is stunning, especially in the fall. After you’ve wandered through the stone arches, head across the street to Casa Dominick’s. If you’re over 21, I highly recommend the sangria or a Constant Buzz (they will check your ID at the door!). The patio is dreamy on a sunny day.
5. Nichols Arboretum (a.k.a. The Arb)
Tucked away just off the edge of campus, the Arb feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk, a spontaneous picnic, or catching peak peony season if your timing’s right. It's a local favorite for a reason.
Whether you're wandering through fairy doors or sipping sangria in the sunshine, Ann Arbor always has something new (or nostalgic) to offer. The charm is in the details, and these gems are waiting to be explored.
