From one Michigan memory-keeper to your growing graduate.

Senior year is packed with excitement, big decisions, and a lot of “what comes next?” As a family photographer based in Livonia, I’ve met many incredible seniors and their families during this life-changing season. There’s a mix of pride, nostalgia, and anticipation—trust me, it goes by fast.

Whether your teen is headed across the country or planning to stay close to home, here’s a college planning checklist to help make senior year a little smoother and more memorable.

Highschool seniors

Fall (September – November)| High school seniors

  •  Create a list of potential colleges. Consider factors like size, location, academic programs, cost, and campus culture.

  •  Schedule campus toursMany Michigan schools (like U of M, Michigan State, Wayne State, and EMU) offer in-person and virtual tours.

  •  Register and take the SAT or ACT (if needed)Some colleges are test-optional, but it’s good to check requirements early.

  •  Finalize your resumeInclude extracurriculars, volunteer work, and achievements—perfect for applications and scholarship forms.

  •  Ask for letters of recommendationGive teachers, counselors, or coaches plenty of notice, and provide them with your resume.

  •  Start college applicationsThe Common App opens August 1st—don't wait until the last minute to get started!

  •  Write and edit your personal statement. This is your time to shine—be authentic, and let your personality come through.

Winter (December – February)

  •  Submit all applications and keep track of deadlinesMany colleges have January 1st deadlines—double-check each school.

  •  Apply for scholarships using local resources like Livonia Community Foundation and national ones like Fastweb and RaiseMe.

  •  Complete the FAFSAT. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid opens in December, so apply early to maximize aid.

  •  Check for early admission or acceptance letters. Stay organized with a folder or spreadsheet to track responses.

Spring (March-May)

  •  Compare financial aid offers. Review each package carefully and consider grants, loans, and out-of-pocket costs.

  •  Make your final college decision. Schools require a decision and deposit by May 1st.

  •  Celebrate your acceptance! Order your college gear, share the news, and enjoy the moment!

  •  Schedule senior photos. You’ll want to capture this huge milestone with authentic, meaningful portraits that reflect who your high school senior is.

Summer (June – August)

  •  Attend orientation and register for classes. Get to know the campus, meet new friends, and set your schedule.

  •  Shop for dorm or apartment supplies. Start early, and remember the basics—a laundry basket, extension cords, and plenty of snacks.

  •  Spend time with family and friends a few special days before the big move.

  •  Print out senior photos and create a keepsake. Whether they’re heading 10 miles away or 1,000, a photo album of home can be the comfort they didn’t know they needed.
