In January 2014, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on an educational J-term abroad in Cambodia. It was an experience that wasn’t solely about capturing moments through my camera lens but rather about soaking in the rich culture and history of a vibrant and profoundly complex country.

Our journey began in Phnom Penh, the bustling capital of Cambodia. The city's dynamic energy was a striking juxtaposition to the historical and somber places we visited later in our trip. Despite not taking many photographs, I found immense value in being fully present in each moment and absorbing each destination's lessons.

Siem Reap and the Ancient Wonders: Michigan Family Photographer

Our travels took us to Siem Reap, famously known as the gateway to the Angkor Wat temple complex. The grandeur of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples is hard to put into words. Although I didn’t focus on photographing these majestic structures, the experience of wandering through the ancient ruins was deeply moving. The intricate carvings and the sense of history that permeates the air stay with you long after you leave.

The Charm of Kep and Koh Tansey

From Siem Reap, we ventured to Kep, a quaint seaside town known for its fresh seafood and serene landscapes. Kep's relaxed atmosphere was a perfect counterpoint to the intense history we had explored earlier. We also took a trip to Koh Tansey, a small island that offered stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. The simplicity and tranquility of Koh Tansey provided a peaceful retreat and a moment of reflection.

Exploring Kampot and the Pepper Farm: Michigan Family Photographer

Our visit to Kampot was another highlight. Kampot is known for its pepper farms, where you can witness the traditional methods of cultivating one of the world’s finest spices. Visiting the Kampot pepper farm was a fascinating glimpse into local agriculture and the dedication required to produce such a renowned product. The experience also highlighted the importance of supporting sustainable and ethical farming practices.

The Somber History of the Killing Fields

One of the most profound parts of our trip was our visit to the Killing Fields. Standing at this historical site, you are confronted with the harrowing legacy of the Khmer Rouge regime. The experience was both sobering and educational, offering a deeper understanding of Cambodia’s past and the resilience of its people. The visit reinforced the importance of remembering history to honor those who suffered and to foster a commitment to preventing such atrocities in the future; as a Michigan family photographer, I strive to do that for Michigan families.

Agape International Missions and Community Impact

Our final stop was Agape International Missions, an organization dedicated to combating human trafficking and supporting survivors. Witnessing their impactful work was incredibly inspiring. It reminded us of the power of compassion and the positive change that can be achieved through dedicated efforts in community service.

Reflecting on the Journey

While my trip to Cambodia wasn’t filled with many photographs, the experiences and lessons learned were invaluable. The rich tapestry of Cambodian culture, history, and community work left a lasting impression on me. It reminded me that the most meaningful memories sometimes come from being fully immersed in the moment rather than capturing it through a camera.

Cambodia’s story is one of beauty, resilience, and hope. It’s a place where every corner has a story, and every encounter adds to the understanding of a nation that has endured so much yet continues to thrive.

The historical sites we visited in Cambodia, like the Killing Fields, as a Michigan family photographer reminded me of the power of resilience and the importance of connection. These experiences can inspire you to focus on the themes of strength and unity in your family photography. Highlighting the bonds between family members, capturing moments of joy amidst challenges, and showing the strength of familial love can add emotional depth to my work.
