Cambodia

In January 2014, I traveled to Cambodia, a trip that profoundly shaped my view of the world. It wasn’t just the breathtaking beauty of Angkor Wat or the peaceful seclusion of Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) that left a lasting mark on me. It was the people I met, the stories they shared, and the painful reality of human trafficking that still exists in places like Cambodia and, unfortunately, in Michigan, too.

As I rode the bus through Cambodia’s countryside, I found myself deep in thought. The landscape passed by like a movie reel, but my mind kept returning to the haunting images of young women, children, and families who were victims of human trafficking. As a photographer, I often focus on capturing beauty, joy, and the candid moments that make life unique. But what I saw in Cambodia was not a moment of beauty but of raw emotion — pain, fear, and the quiet despair of those trapped in a nightmare they couldn’t escape.

The Role of Agape International Missions (AIM): Cambodia

During my time in Cambodia, I visited Agape International Missions (AIM), a powerful anti-human trafficking organization working to rescue and rehabilitate victims. You can learn more about their incredible work on their website here. What I learned at AIM was eye-opening and heartbreaking. I saw firsthand what human trafficking victims looked like out in the open. These weren’t hidden away in dark corners of society, as we often hear about in the United States. They were standing before me—survivors, usually young girls, struggling to regain a sense of self.

This experience forever changed how I view human trafficking and its widespread impact. The truth is, while human trafficking may seem like a distant issue, it’s happening right here in Michigan. From the bustling streets around Jackson to the tourist-filled areas of Mackinaw Island and the remote corners near Traverse City, human trafficking is lurking behind closed doors—hidden in plain sight. We as a society can no longer afford to ignore it.

The Power of Photography: Capturing Emotion

But as a photographer, I believe in the power of capturing emotion. Photography can be a tool for shedding light on the darker corners of the world. It is more than just an image; it’s a story frozen in time. Every frame holds the potential to evoke empathy, spark awareness, and encourage change. In many ways, photography has the ability to capture not just what is seen on the surface but the emotions that lie underneath—feelings that are sometimes impossible to express in words alone.

Photography sessions can serve as a powerful medium for raising awareness about the issues we often overlook. When I photograph, my goal is always to reveal the raw, vulnerable, and authentic emotions of my subjects. These moments—whether it’s joy, grief, strength, or vulnerability—speak louder than words. They invite us to look beyond the surface and understand what people are truly experiencing. In many ways, it’s a chance to connect with the very essence of humanity.

Human Trafficking: A Michigan Reality

Human trafficking is a crime that preys on the vulnerability of individuals, stripping them of their dignity and autonomy. But through the lens of photography, there is hope. By using our cameras and voices, we can raise awareness and shed light on these hidden victims, giving them the opportunity to be seen, heard, and supported.

The sad reality is that human trafficking is happening in Michigan, too. These crimes often occur in the shadows, from the streets around Jackson to the tourist hotspots of Mackinaw Island and even near the serene areas of Traverse City. Victims, often hidden from view, are silently enduring their suffering while the world passes by. But through photography, we can change that—by drawing attention to their stories, exposing their plight, and making their voices impossible to ignore.

Photography for Change: Using the Lens to Amplify Voices

As a Michigan photographer, I feel an immense responsibility to use my work to capture beautiful moments and share stories that matter. We must never lose sight of the fact that photography can be a tool for change—a way to amplify the voices of those who need it most.

If you or anyone you know is interested in helping combat human trafficking, I urge you to explore the work done by organizations like Agape International Missions. Their tireless efforts in Cambodia and beyond save lives, one at a time.

Let’s continue to raise our voices and, as photographers, use our cameras to tell stories that matter. Let’s capture the emotion that can spark real change.
