Every January, like clockwork, we pack our bags and head north for a long weekend with friends in Traverse City. It’s become a tradition—a sacred pause in the middle of winter that gives us space to slow down, connect, and be.

This annual getaway is a breath of fresh, snowy air in a world that moves fast.

Cabin Life: Together is the Best Place to Be

We rent a cozy cabin each year to soak up the time together. There are no distractions—just a warm fire, a stocked kitchen, and all of us under one roof. Evenings are spent playing games, chatting late into the night, and gathering around the table for homemade dinners.

It’s simple, intentional living—and it’s one of the best parts of the whole trip.

The Traverse City Vibe: Slower, Friendlier, Real

There’s something about the Traverse City area that feels different. Life moves a little slower up there. People are more friendly and more present. There’s a small-town charm in how locals greet you at a winery or talk at a shop.

But it’s also the kind of place where you learn to roll with the punches. Especially in the trades—if someone says they’re coming out to do a job, there’s a good chance they might not show up that day. And that’s just part of the rhythm up north. It teaches you patience and how to enjoy the in-between.

Sips, Stops, and Small-Town Charm

When we’re not at the cabin, we’re out exploring. We love visiting the local breweries, cideries, and wineries—each with its own story and flavor. Hop Lot is a must, even in winter, with its outdoor fire pits and laid-back atmosphere.

We browse antique stores, always hoping to stumble upon something special. A trip isn't complete without popping into the Polish Pottery store in Cedar, Michigan, where I always find a new piece I didn’t know I needed.

Winter Walks, Ski Days & Snowy Moments

The winter activities up there are endless. We go on peaceful hikes through snowy woods, walk along vacant beaches where Lake Michigan stretches out like glass and hit the slopes for downhill skiing and snow tubing. There’s something so refreshing about embracing the cold instead of hiding from it—like winter was meant to be enjoyed here.

A Tradition Worth Keeping

What started as a fun winter trip has become something we all look forward to—something that grounds us each new year. It reminds me how important it is to slow down, spend time with the people who matter, and enjoy the simple pleasures that make life sweet.

Whether it’s a quiet, snowy morning, a shared meal, or a spontaneous detour off a backroad, this tradition holds a special place in my heart.

Here’s to more meaningful moments—on camera and off.

If you value slowing down and preserving life’s sweetest chapters, I’d love to work with you to capture your story.
