Labor Day weekend is the unofficial farewell to summer—and in Michigan, we know how to make the most of it. Whether you're looking to escape into nature, plan one last family adventure, or just slow down before the fall rush, it's not too late to make this long weekend meaningful.

As a Traverse City family photographer and someone who grew up camping all over this beautiful state, I believe in creating space for rest, authentic connection, and those simple, joy-filled moments. And Labor Day weekend is the perfect time for that.

Here are some last-minute Labor Day weekend ideas that your whole family can enjoy—no plane tickets or complicated itineraries required.

Michigan camping

1. Go Camping—Even If It’s in Your Backyard

Growing up, camping was a big part of our family rhythm. Whether it was just us or we were joined by my dad’s brother and his family, we’d pitch tents all over Michigan—on lakeshores, in state parks, or deep in the woods.

Camping helps you reconnect with nature, unplug from the fast-paced world, and really be present. If campsites are full, get creative: set up a tent in the backyard, make s’mores, tell stories around a fire pit, and sleep under the stars.

Bonus idea: Bring a disposable film camera or book a last-minute mini photo session to capture those cozy, unplugged moments.

2. Explore a Michigan State Park You’ve Never Visited

Michigan has over 100 state parks, and so many are under-the-radar treasures. If you're thinking about a spontaneous trip, remember that state park campgrounds tend to book up fast, sometimes before the camping season even starts. If everything’s full this year, don't worry. Use this time to scout your favorite park and set a calendar reminder to book early next season when reservations open.

Some favorites to consider visiting (even for a day trip!) include:

  • Ludington State Park – dunes, a lighthouse, and peaceful hiking trails

  • Hoffmaster State Park – beautiful views of Lake Michigan with fewer crowds

  • Waterloo Recreation Area – tons of wooded space, close to Metro Detroit

  • Tahquamenon Falls – for a more extended road trip with significant waterfall payoff

Pack a picnic, bring the bug spray, and don’t forget the camera. These spots are made for memory-making, even if you’re exploring for the day.

3. Host a Family BBQ or Potluck in the Park

Sometimes the best memories are made close to home. Local parks are ideal for casual family gatherings and last-minute plans. Bring lawn games, easy eats, and let the kids run wild.

If you’ve got extended family or friends in town, this could be a perfect opportunity to capture a group photo or hire a photographer to document this rare time together.

4. Take a Day Trip Somewhere Scenic

Don’t underestimate the power of a quick road trip. Some Michigan Labor Day weekend favorites include:

  • Holland – stroll the beach, visit Windmill Island, or grab local ice cream

  • Ann Arbor – explore the fairy doors, picnic in The Arb, and shop downtown

  • Port Austin – kayak Turnip Rock or watch the sunset over Lake Huron

  • Frankenmuth – for a bit of charm, chicken dinners, and riverboat cruises

These spots are family-friendly and full of charm. And they all photograph beautifully, too.

5. Create a Family Photo Memory

Labor Day weekend in Michigan is a perfect time to document your family as they are right now—whether they’re playing in the yard, splashing in a lake, or cuddling on a blanket at golden hour.

As a family photographer based in Traverse City, Michigan, I love helping families turn their weekend moments into timeless keepsakes. Whether you’re planning a last-minute reunion, camping trip, or casual gathering, don’t forget to take the photo—or better yet, let me help you be in the photo.

Let’s Make It a Weekend to Remember

Labor Day doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes, the best weekends are when we slow down and soak up the moments we might otherwise rush through.

Wherever this holiday takes you—camping under the stars or grilling with family—make space for connection, laughter, and memory-making.
