Smart tips for saving money (without skipping the essentials)
By Kelseycharmayne Photography

Back-to-school season is full of excitement—and, let’s be honest—a little financial stress, too. It can all add up quickly between growing kids, classroom wish lists, and the cost of new school supplies in Michigan. But here's the good news: you don’t have to spend a fortune to send your kids back to school prepared and confident.
As a local Michigan mom and family photographer, I’m all about practical solutions—including finding affordable school supplies. Whether you’re in Livonia, Ann Arbor, Canton, or anywhere in between, here are some of my favorite ways to shop smart and save:
🛒 1. Dollar Stores = Hidden Goldmines | School supplies in Michigan
Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Five Below are great for grabbing essentials like:✔️ Notebooks✔️ Pencils & pens✔️ Highlighters✔️ Erasers, rulers, and glue sticks✔️ Basic art supplies.
They also carry classroom decor and supplies if you're a teacher or homeschool parent!
♻️ 2. Thrift Stores = Binder & Folder Heaven
Check out your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, and even smaller local thrift stores. You’d be surprised at how many brand-new or gently used school items get donated, especially binders, folders, pencil cases, and backpacks.
Bonus tip: You might even score a cute vintage lunchbox or reusable water bottle!
💸 3. Watch the Sales (and Know When to Shop)
Retailers like Meijer, Target, Walmart, and even Walgreens run weekly sales on school supplies, especially in mid-to-late July and early August.
Look for:
25¢ folders
$1 glue stick packs
BOGO (buy one, get one) deals on Crayola and paper
Sign up for store apps or email alerts to stay in the know—and combine deals with coupons if you're into that!
🔁 4. Reuse What You Already Have
Before you buy anything new, take inventory of what’s still in good shape from last year. That half-used notebook? Rip out the used pages and label them for a new subject. That mostly clean backpack? Toss it in the wash and freshen it up. Are the markers dried out? Keep the ones that still work and replace the basics.
Teaching kids to reuse when possible is not only eco-friendly but a great life lesson, too.
🛍️ 5. Community Back-to-School Drives & Giveaways
Watch for free backpack and supply giveaways hosted by local churches, nonprofits, and community centers. Events often happen in late July or early August, and they’re a fantastic resource for families who could use a little extra help.
Check local Facebook groups or search "Back to School Giveaway [your city] Michigan."
✨ A Little Thought = Big Savings
Getting your child ready for school doesn't have to cost a fortune. Planning, creativity, and a good dollar store run can go a long way.
And while you’re prepping for the school year, don’t forget to schedule your fall family photo session—those back-to-school smiles deserve to be captured and celebrated, too!
